어떻게 그들의 이름을 얻었을까?

왜 송편은 반달처럼 보일까?

There are many interesting stories 

about our traditional food.

우리의 전통음식에 대한 

많은 재미있는 이야기들이 있다.

 

Let’s dive into the fun history 

of our food.

우리 음식의 재미있는 역사 속으로

뛰어 들어가 보자.

 

Tangpyeongchae

탕평채

 

★One day,

King Yeongjo was having dinner

with his officials

and offered them something special.

어느 날, 

영조대왕은 그의 관료들과 저녁식사를 

먹는 중이었고, 특별한 무엇인가를 

그들에게 제안했다.

 

 

It was a dish 

with four colorful ingredients.

그것은 4가지 다채로운 색깔의

재료를 가진 음식이었다.

Each ingredient symbolized 

a different political party.

각각의 재료는 다른 정당을 의미했다.

★Yeongjo wanted to say t

hat the four parties should work

 in harmony like this dish.

영조는 이 음식처럼 조화를 이루어

4개의 당이 협동해야 한다는 말을

하고 싶었다.

 

This dish was called 

tangpyeongchae.

이 음식은 탕평채라고 불렸다.

 

The name came from 

Yeongjo’s policy tangpyeongchaek.

이 이름은 영조의 탕평책에서 유래했다.

 

 

Sinseollo

신선로

 

★ In the time of King Yeonsan,

there was a scholar

who was famous for his honesty.

연산군 시절에, 그의 정직함으로 

유명한 학자가 있었다.

★ When the king did something wrong,

the scholar was never afraid

of telling him so.

왕이 잘못된 일을 했을 때, 

그 학자가 그에게 그렇게 말하는 것을 

결코 두려워하지 않았다.

However, the king never listened to him.

그러나 왕은 그의 말을 결코 듣지 않았다.

★ The scholar was so disappointed

that he went to live on a mountain.

그 학자는 매우 실망해서

산에서 살기 위해 들어갔다.

While he lived there by himself,

he mainly ate vegetables.

그가 거기서 혼자 사는 동안, 

그는 채소만 주로 먹었다.

He made a special pot to cook

many different vegetables together.

그는 많은 다른 채소들을

함께 요리하기 위해서 특별한 솥을 만들었다.

People called this pot

and the food in it sinseollo.

사람들이 이 솥과 그 솥에 들어있는 음식을

신선로라고 불렀다.

★That is because the scholar lived

like a sinseon,

an imaginary person who lives alone

in nature.

왜냐하면 자연 속에서 혼자 살았던 가상의 인물,

신선처럼 살았기 때문이다.

 

Songpyeon

송편

 

It was the time of the last king of Baekje.

백제의 마지막 왕 시대였다. 

 

One day,

the king and his servants found

a strange turtle.

어느 날, 그 왕과 그의 신하들은

신기한 거북이를 발견했다.

 

★ Something was written on its back.

그것의 등에 무언가가 쓰여 있었다.

 

It said, 

“Baekje is like a full moon, 

but Silla is like a half moon.”

그것은 "백제는 보름달 같지만, 

신라는 반달 같다"라고 쓰여 있었다.

 

The king asked a fortune teller, 

“What does this mean?”

그 왕은 점쟁이에게 물었다. 

"이것이 무슨 의미인가?"

 

★The fortune teller answered, 

“A full moon will soon become 

smaller.

그 점쟁이는 대답했다,

"보름달은 곧 점점 작아질 것입니다.

On the other hand, 

a half moon will grow bigger 

and become a full moon.”

반면에 반달은 점점 더 커지고

보름달이 될 것입니다."

 

The king became worried 

about his kingdom.

왕은 그의 왕국에 대해 걱정을 했다.

However, 

people of Silla were very happy 

to learn this and made rice cakes 

in the shape of a half moon.

그러나 신라 사람들은 이것을 알게 되어

너무 기뻤고, 반달 모양의 떡을 만들었다.

 

★Since then, 

people have enjoyed 

these half-moon shaped rice cakes, 

songpyeon.

그 이후로 사람들은 

반달 모양의 송편을 즐겨왔다.
